Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935)
Jessie Willcox Smith received her early artistic training at the School of Design for Women and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins before studying with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute. Like many of the women illustrators, Smith specialized in domestic scenes, drawing and painting images of mothers, babies and children. Although some of her most well-loved illustrations were for books--Little Women, Heidi, A Book of Old Stories and Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses--she also painted a great many illustrations for magazines, including McClure’s and Cosmopolitan. Smith may be best known for the nearly 200 covers she did for Good Housekeeping between 1917 and 1934.
