Edward Penfield (1866-1925)
Edward Penfield began his training at the Art Students League from 1889-1895, studying with the influential American artist George deForest Brush. Penfield quickly found his own direction, though, coming to prominence as one of America’s leading poster designers. His simple yet elegant creations also lent themselves well to advertising work, and Penfield spent many years with the clothing firm of Hart Shaffner and Marx. He also did numerous covers for both Collier’s and The Saturday Evening Post. Penfield further extended his influence over the field of American illustration when he served as art director for Harper’s magazines from 1891-1901 and later as an instructor at the Art Students League.
