Francis Xavier Leyendecker
(1877-1924)
Born in Germany and trained in Paris with his older brother Joseph ("J. C."), F. X. Leyendecker achieved fame for his many covers and advertising illustrations. He was equally at home working in either oils or gouache, with strong designs that could be taken in at a glance. Although he did most of his covers for Collier’s, Leyendecker’s work could also be seen on The Saturday Evening Post, Vogue, and Bookman’s. Always working in the shadow of his more famous older brother, Frank died a premature and somewhat tragic death in 1924.
